Do you know what scares me more than anything? The thought that one day, I will become my mother.
So imagine how gut-wrenching it is whenever I open up Vogue or Elle to find adverts for companies like Comptoirs des Cotonniers, where mothers and daughters are wearing the same outfits. They look perfect, of course, but they also look so...alike. Isn't that terrifying? Why would a 16 year old want to dress like her 40 year old mother, when she should be pushing the boundaries and enjoying all the sins her youth allows her to get away with!
Where is the rebellious nature which has historically defined British fashion? When British fashion becomes conservative, it becomes stale. Here, we do fashion degrees to nurture our creative talent, not neccessarily to learn traditional technical skills. We are creative, we are confident and totally unafraid of who we are, and that is why we are in such demand internationally.
Unless your mother is Bjork, dressing like a middle aged lady doesn't exactly scream "I'm pushing boundaries!" ...Losing that attitude means losing the very essence of British fashion.
